Advantages and disadvantages of luxury vinyl plank flooring

Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring

Luxury vinyl flooring has gone from viable to desirable. Manufacturers have made the floor type more appealing thanks to constant tweaking and innovating. It’s no longer a floor that is purchased solely because of affordability. Rather, luxury vinyl plank flooring now brings so much more to a home. Of course, it’s not perfect, but you’ll find more advantages than disadvantages for the unique floor type.

Visually Appealing

Luxury vinyl flooringluxury vinyl plank flooring is created to mimic actual wood, stone, or tile. It does so successfully. The chances are extremely slim that a visitor to your home will be able to pinpoint that your floor is vinyl instead of actual hardwood. Vinyl’s design process has become advanced to the point in which the material looks practically identical to the material it is meant to represent.

In addition, there are numerous designs that can be selected for luxury vinyl plank flooring. Ultimately, you can give your home the authentic look of hardwood, but at a lower cost with luxury vinyl.

Luxury vinyl plank flooring is composed of multiple layers, including a relatively thick urethane layer. This layer gives the floor type many benefits. Specifically, scratch resistance, stain resistance and water resistance. A common issue with hardwood flooring is its vulnerability to moisture. Hence, hardwood is not as commonly used in kitchens or bathrooms.

That’s not a problem with luxury vinyl. Its water resistance makes it perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, and even basements and laundry rooms. The thickness of vinyl plank also makes it more comfortable to the touch. Plus, its scratch resistance allows for your pets to run freely. The resistant qualities of luxury vinyl flooring should result in a lifetime of at least 15-20 years.

Easy Install

Another standout positive to luxury vinyl flooring is its easy installation. In fact, it’s so easy that you might even be able to install it on your own. Vinyl flooring snaps, hooks, or glues together. Vinyl can be installed on top of a subfloor, whether it be another layer of vinyl, or concrete, or plywood. The subfloor is really the most important part regarding installation, but we will get more into that in a second.

Again, luxury vinyl plank flooring only mimics hardwood; therefore, it will be less expensive than true hardwood. You’ll find vinyl to cost between $2 – $7 per square foot, similar to the cost of engineered hardwood. The primary difference between luxury vinyl and engineered hardwood is luxury vinyl’s scratch resistance. Because engineered hardwood is topped with actual hardwood, the surface will still scratch. Given all of the aforementioned qualities, luxury vinyl is certainly a good bargain.

Requires a flawless substrate

Back to the substrate, or subfloor. Luxury vinyl can allow its layers to show through. Thus, imperfections to the substrate will eventually show through if not fixed. This applies to dents, stains, cracks, etc. It is important that the subfloor is completely level and free from moisture as well. Luxury vinyl plank flooring in Grapevine, TX is moisture resistant; however, moisture below the material when installed can negatively affect the adhesive.

Weak against sunlight

Luxury vinyl will fade if consistently exposed to sunlight. For this reason, it is best to avoid this floor type for outdoor purposes. As for indoor use, you should be fine as long as you close your blinds throughout the day or have your vinyl flooring in a shaded area of your home.
